All of the many miracles that Jesus performed throughout his ministry have been subject to innumerable paintings and other cultural expressions – from the cradle of Christianity to contemporary art.
Healing the sick, laying on of hands, walking on water and turning water into wine are but a few of the miracles that Christ performed in the Bible. All of the canonical Gospels describe supernatural and divine powers that allowed Jesus to perform all these things.
Some Christian label these stories as symbolic – intended as allegories, whereas others believe that raising of the dead and other miraculous deeds could indeed be performed by the Son of God. The allegorical versus the literal interpretation of Jesus’ miracles are not reflected art. Pictures of Jesus performing miracles are quite hands on in most depictions of the miracles.
From the miracle of the loaves and fish to the calming of the storm and the many healings of the sick are often painted in detail. |
