Temptation of Christ
Written by Joyce

After John had baptized Jesus, Christ went out into the desert to fast, and in the wilderness he is to be tempted by the devil. This event from the bible has intrigued writers and artists for hundreds of years and is often found in art and literature.

Satan asked for demonstrations of Jesus’ divine powers, and offered him the kingdoms of the world in exchange for worship. It's no wonder an event like this has been such an interesting and popular motive, as it deals with the trials not only of Christ, but metaphorically of the trials that we face each and every day.

It’s a subject of debate what the actual motives of the devil represent, or if the devil acted as God’s tool to test Jesus. Nevertheless it has intrigued countless Christian artists through the years, as well as writers.

Many famous literary works deal with the subject, such as Milton’s “Paradise Regained” and “The Grand Inquisitor” by Dostoyevsky. It is also the topic of the controversial Martin Scorsese movie “The Last Temptation of Christ”.

After the temptations Jesus is tended by angels – another popular motive in art – God takes care of Jesus after he has proven that in spite of the harsh trials he has not lost his faith.
