Da Vinci's depiction of the Last Supper is clearly the most famous and most replicated piece of art from this event (and has also been used in many other contexts), but there are countless others as well.
Jesus’ Last supper with the twelve apostles and the subsequent betrayal by Judas is a key event in the Gospels that have become foundation for not only the Communion, but also legends such as the one of the Holy Grail – an item that has been the subject to heaps of literature and art in itself, even though it plays only a very small part in the Bible.
As it is a fundamental element of Christian belief, the last supper is a very common motive in Christian art. The environment in which the Last Supper took place is not described in detail, leaving the artist a lot of room for interpretation – hence the many different styles and motives. The most famous depiction of the Last Supper is no doubt the painting by Leonardo da Vinci, which has also been copied (and parodied) countless times. However, it has also been motive for myriad other paintings by famous artists. |
