Although the Resurrection and Ascension of Christ is not as heavily featured in Christian art as the Passion, its symbolism and implications have had significant influence on Christian artists. The reason why the Ascension is not as often interpreted on canvas is most likely that it is only briefly mentioned in the gospels, relative to the very detailed account of the passion.
Resurrection and ascension is interpreted somewhat differently in the various schools of Christianity, and the meaning of the empty tomb and Jesus' physical appearance also carry a slightly different significance in eastern versus westerns schools of faith.
What the traditions have in common, especially in art, is the relationship between the ascension and the second coming of Christ. The fact that Jesus rose from the dead to sit at God's right-hand side until the time of the Last Judgment is a unifying aspect in the Christian theologies as well as in art. |
