Another chapter in the life of Jesus that has been depicted a great deal in art throughout the years is also the only event in the bible that takes place in Jesus’ childhood other than, of course, nativity. As those familiar with the bible knows, it’s referred to as the Finding in the Temple, or sometimes the Disputation, or Christ among the Doctors.

In the Gospel of Luke, when Jesus is twelve years old he goes on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem with Mary and Joseph. During the time in Jerusalem, Jesus is found in discussion with the elders of the Temple, who are astonished by Jesus’ wisdom, considering his young age.

In art, this story is often used to illustrate the human shortcomings and all that is lacking in human knowledge compared to the infinite wisdom of the divine. Historically, it is a very common subject in paintings and murals, although the motive seems less prevalent in modern art.
